Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Aday Mara's availability for the season opener is under threat due to a contract dispute with his former Spanish club, Basket Zaragoza. The 7-foot-3 center, the Thunder's No. 12 overall pick, has been a preseason standout but now faces a potential legal block to his international transfer just days before the team's first game against the San Antonio Spurs on October 20. This news arrives as the Thunder look to regroup from a 116-89 preseason loss to the Houston Rockets on October 15.
Basket Zaragoza issued an official statement on October 16 asserting that Aday Mara remains under contract with the club for the 2026-27 season. The Spanish organization argues that Mara's departure to play college basketball at UCLA in 2023 did not terminate his professional agreement. Because an international transfer wasn't needed for that NCAA move, Zaragoza claims its contractual rights are still valid. The club has warned it will formally oppose any request for Mara's transfer to the NBA and is prepared to take legal action. It communicated this position to the Spanish Basketball Federation, FIBA, the NBA, and the Thunder after the 2026 NBA Draft.
Mara has been one of the most impressive stories of Oklahoma City's preseason. In five exhibition games, he averaged 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 blocks. He shot an extremely efficient 26 for 33 from the field, showing quick adaptation to the NBA pace. His breakout included a perfect 10-for-10, 22-point game in a 128-126 preseason loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on October 7. He followed that with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five blocks in a 113-110 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on October 12. These performances offered a tantalizing preview of his potential alongside Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein in the frontcourt.
The immediate focus is on the season opener against the San Antonio Spurs on October 20. The Thunder's statement on the matter indicates they are aware of the situation, but there has been no NBA ruling barring Mara from playing. Some the disputed transfer document may not be strictly necessary for him to suit up. Until there's a formal decision from FIBA or the NBA, his status remains uncertain. This cloud hangs over a team that showed promise in a tight 114-112 preseason win over the Indiana Pacers on October 13 but ended its exhibition slate with a lopsided defeat. Mara's combination of elite size, rim protection, and passing skill makes him more than a traditional project. Losing him, even temporarily, would be a blow to Oklahoma City's early-season rotation depth. The organization and its fans are now in a holding pattern, waiting to see if their exciting rookie can take the court when the games start to count.
